Summer Skiing: Where Can You Go?


Many skiers pack up their winter ski equipment and head off to new summer activities. 

But, if what you want to do is ski, there are some great places to ski that are open during the North American and European summer months, as long as you don’t mind travel.

Of course, some skiers are lucky enough to simply live near these resorts.

 

Las Lenas, Argentina

Located in the Andes Mountains, it’s winter here while summer at home.  This is a popular family ski resort, yet has plenty of skiing areas for intermediate and advanced skiers.  Argentina ski areas don’t have any out of bounds areas, so beware.  But if you want great summer skiing followed by many activities at night, this is the place to visit.  During the season, Las Lenas offers many contests and skiing events.

 

Perisher, Austrailia

This is the largest ski area in Australia and is always busy during the season.  Families and skiers of all levels are welcome here.  There are four different villages connected to five terrain parks.  Many Olympic and professional athletes train here.  Camps are offered all season long to improve your skills.

 

Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia

This mountain area actually offers skiing 11 months of the year and is always open during the summer.  To be open during the summer, Whistler offers skiing on the Horstman Glacier.  This ski area should only be tried by intermediate and advanced skiers.  During this season, there are many camps offered to teach extreme skiing moves and skills.  Many professional skiers train here.

 

Timberline Resort, Oregon

This Mt. Hood ski area offers skiing 11 months of the year.  During the summer months, only high glaciers are open.  Many skiers look forward to skiing these extra challenging areas during the summer.  If you are local to the resort, you can buy a year pass to ski any time all year long.  Timberline does not have any blackout days for its passes, so do come on holidays.

 

Ski Portillo, Chile

This ski resort is open all summer, which is Chile’s winter.  This resort is isolated and only has room for 400 skiers at the one hotel.  The runs are for intermediate or high level skiers, and the isolation may not be for everyone.  The hotel goes out of its ways to keep its guests busy during the off ski hours with shows and contests.  The resort is 100% above the tree line.  The resort provides helicopter rides to reach the highest ski areas.

 

Les 2 Alpes France

This summer ski resort is located on the Mont de Lans Glacier and has runs for all levels.  Skiers can enjoy half pipe, along with eight runs of varying levels.  Skiers here look forward to the summer camps and programs held during July and August each year.

 

Hintertux, Austria

This glacier ski resort is open all year, every day, but skiing runs from May through October.  This run has challenging courses at the top of the mountain, but skiers of all levels will find events and ski runs here.  This resort is huge, and one of the lift buses holds up to 3,000 people.  To reach the ski area, skiers can take transportation from the nearby towns, or rent one of the on-site cabins.

 

Zermatt, Switzerland

This resort is actually shared between Italy and Switzerland and has over 16 miles of runs.  It offers stunning views of the actual Matterhorn.  Guests can find runs at intermediate and advanced levels.  The skiing season runs between May and Mid-November on this Alpine glacier.  After a snowfall, this area is famous for its powder-filled runs.
